Available Tobacco Treatment Resources – Mississippi Coalition for Tobacco Cessation
The U.S. Surgeon General’s Report, Smoking and Health, released in 1964, provided the first warning from the Federal Government that smoking was hazardous to health and could cause lung cancer and heart disease. In the 50 years that have passed since that Surgeon General’s report, tobacco control efforts have contributed to a drastic reduction in smoking. Despite the great strides made in the battle against tobacco, the 2014 Surgeon General’s Report, The Health Consequences of Smoking – 50 Years of Progress, indicated that smoking has contributed to the deaths of more than 20 million Americans since 1964.
Though statistics indicate that people with mental illness and substance abuse are less likely to quit smoking, this does not mean that they cannot quit. Quitting is not easy, but it can be done! A person can never be too old or have smoked too long to quit. The human body is very resilient and begins the healing process 20 minutes after the last cigarette is smoked.
While quitting is never easy, there are programs and resources available in Mississippi to provide cessation support and services. Please click on a program/resource name to learn more about the support and services provided.
